    "Drown"

"Drown" is a handful of tunes and ditties from late-2006 / early-2007. The songs were originally for The Cherubs, but instead became the debut for a lo-fi pop project called "Candysound". A lot of these songs reappear on a full length with the first incarnation of the band.

about

Inevitably, with any good band you have a group of talented musicians. And, a fair amount of the time, those musicians happen to get the solo itch and try their hand at going it alone. This practice can lead to some horrific results as oftentimes the sum of the parts is far more than any one part could hope to be.

Nay, not this time. Candysound is a welcome departure from that sour kind of fate which many soloists face. The record is the pet project of Teo Crider, vocalist/guitarist of Burlington’s teenage indie punk heroes The Cherubs. Supposedly all the songs are Cherubs cuts that didn’t make the album, but you could have fooled me—the certainly somber and subdued Crider delivers an impressive effort, handling everything from the guitar to the bongos on the record himself.

Crider’s thriving adolescence just bleeds through the syrupy sweet vocals on top of lazily picked acoustic guitars. He really shines on the tracks where we can find him sitting in front of a microphone with his guitar and nothing else. For one, because the percussion and auxiliary instruments on other tracks sometimes muddy the composition on such lo-fi recording, but mostly because the tracks are so damn good. The words are sad and playful at the same time, like on “In a Nutshell, Please,” a delightfully manic Dear Jane letter of a song replete with quirky, out-of-tune guitar work that adds a strange charm to the track.

I’m sure what with The Cherubs snatching a Demo of the Week honor on Seattle’s 107.7 The End radio station as well as having a busy calendar of performances, Teo will be a bit distracted from solo ventures for a while. But it’s something worth pursuing further—he has a metric ton of potential.
